How much does a new driveway cost in Teesside?
Every job varies with size, surface, ground conditions, drainage and access. The only reliable way to price your drive is to see it, which is why every quote starts with a free site visit.
Full breakdowns, including dropped kerbs and drainage, are in our Teesside driveway cost guide.
Built for Teesside ground, literally
Driveways fail from the bottom up, and Teesside's ground is unforgiving. Most of the conurbation sits on heavy glacial boulder clay: it drains poorly, shifts between wet winters and dry summers, and punishes any installer who skimps on the sub-base. Parts of central Middlesbrough and Stockton add made ground from the area's iron and chemical heritage on top of that.
That's why every quote we give specifies excavation depth and sub-base, not just the surface. A properly built Teesside drive means 150 to 200mm of compacted MOT Type 1 on a weed membrane (more on soft clay), with falls that move water away from your house, not towards it.
The drainage rule that catches people out
Since 2008, paving more than 5m² of a front garden with a non-permeable surface needs planning permission, unless rainwater drains to a lawn or border or you use a permeable material. Resin bound and permeable block paving sidestep the rule entirely. Our planning permission guide covers the rule, dropped kerbs and the four Teesside councils' processes.
What good looks like
Every quote we send follows the same standard:
- Insured: public liability cover, shown on request.
- Quotes: itemised, with sub-base depth and drainage specified, never a single line and a cash price.
- Guarantees: the workmanship guarantee set out in writing with the quote.
Which material suits your house?
As a rule of thumb across Teesside's housing stock: 1930s semis in Acklam, Linthorpe and Hartburn suit block paving in a charcoal or brindle border; new-builds at Wynyard and Ingleby Barwick lean towards resin bound for a clean modern finish; terraces in central Middlesbrough and Redcar often need compact tarmac or a shared-surface solution; and rural-edge properties around Yarm and the villages suit gravel. Frequently asked questions
How much does a new driveway cost in Teesside?
It depends on the size of the job, the materials, the groundwork underneath and access. We price every job after a free site visit and send an itemised quote, so you can see exactly where the money goes.
Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?
Only if you're paving more than 5m² of your front garden with a non-permeable surface without drainage to a lawn or border. Permeable materials like resin bound and permeable block paving don't need permission. A dropped kerb always needs council approval.
How long does a driveway installation take?
A typical two-car drive takes 2 to 4 days: a day to excavate and lay the sub-base, then a day or two to lay and finish the surface. Resin and tarmac are usually fastest; block paving takes longer on intricate patterns.
How quickly will I get a quote?
Quotes come back fast, and the quote itself is free.
Is the quote really free?
Yes. You tell us about the job, we visit and price it properly, and you decide in your own time. There's no charge and no pressure.
